class="MsoNormal">The WPA [Works Progress Administration, renamed the Work Projects Administration in 1939] was good to Bernal Heights. It provided much-needed construction jobs which created the Aztec Street steps, the grading and paving of Bernal Heights Blvd, and the St. Mary’s Park playground. But most importantly, the excavating, grading and wall-building of the Bernal Recreation Center’s field and playground literally paved the way for the construction of our jewel in the crown: the Bernal Heights Branch Library.

A second New Deal of sorts, in the name of the Branch Library Improvement Program, has been employing tradespeople all over San Francisco for the past several years. It’s interesting how today’s economic reality parallels that earlier era and once again the building of civic structures symbolizes hope for people.

In our neighborhood CDX Builders, a San Francisco company, were awarded the job and their crew has been steadily working on the renovation. Their effort is bringing architect Andrew Maloney’s vision to life.

Andy works with the Library Design Studio of the City’s Bureau of Architecture and his design is an intelligent and thoughtfully elegant response to the original building, which was designed by the well known and significant local architect Frederick H. Meyer. The renovation, as the original building, will clearly stand the test of time. Andy understands the bones of the building and is honoring them through his work. Our dusty architectural gem is being improved through his careful lead and the crew’s steady effort.

The interior workmanship is of superior quality: wood veneers painstakingly matched through careful refinishing, thoughtful use of tiling and flooring and creative use of lighting and ceiling finishes. The Beaux Arts staircase seamlessly dovetails with existing walls. The entire newly installed lower floor, which houses the public restrooms, children’s, meeting, and staff rooms has detailing which is fully integrated with the upper —not an easy feat—considering it was once a basement.

The front exterior façade now provides an access ramp which is gracefully sculpted to include public seating. There are new lighting fixtures which echo nearby streetlamps and the era of the original building. And a small veranda facing the corner provides a comfortable place for neighbors to converse and watch passersby. The south façade incorporates a second access ramp into the Children’s Room which does not intrude upon the architectural lines of the building.

Valerie and I have had the privilege of regular sneak-peaks of the work in order to snap photos for the blog. As you enter the dusty zone, you’ll first encounter the cacophony of accents and languages of the crew. Their common language is that of the builder’s and their focus is on skill and craft. They cannot wait to show off the finished product and are flattered and proud every time they hear us ooohing and ahhing over the transformation of the building. They really appreciate working with Andy, whose attention to detail and demanding standards are setting a high bar but teaching them a lot.

I remember my first experience of the building very well. You might not notice much when walking by the library. However, inside the walls are going up and insulation is being installed. We'll be grateful for this work on winter afternoons. Also, the new stairwell going down to the first floor is being plastered. Thanks to the design considerations of our architect, this new addition will meld nicely with the original walls. Stay tuned! Pictures of the newly sealed walls will be forthcoming.
Rare Bookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12495394549822650533noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9090285190291446603.post-91669532239952500522009-03-12T16:43:00.000-07:002009-03-25T12:50:19.942-07:00<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 133px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_EzEqeq_huk4/Sbme0edat1I/AAAAAAAAApg/KTqrYCOLb3M/s320/lamppost+final.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5312451859827046226" />
New beacons for the neighborhood’s original beacon—the library. The library construction has passed its one year mark and we are well on our way to completion. Today I stopped in to see what was happening. I wandered into the Lower Level to snap some pictures and on my way out something caught my eye on the ceiling. It was covered with autographs of the crew! What a sweet, symbolic gesture. If you want to see who is working on your library, click below. And know that when the job is finished, you will never, ever see their names again. Although we will honor their hard work by enjoying the beautiful library which they are helping to build.

Rare Bookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12495394549822650533noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9090285190291446603.post-73996536350537663642008-09-27T15:42:00.001-07:002008-09-27T17:55:49.562-07:00The work is back on at 500 Cortland Avenue! Thursday and Friday found the renovation crew pouring tar and buttoning up the roof. Inside, most of the construction activity is now focused downstairs. New cement flooring has been poured and work on the elevator is progressing. Next week the crew will start framing the walls.

Note: Due to the lack of electrical lighting, covered windows, and my marginal camera; the picture of the community room is dim.

Rare Bookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12495394549822650533noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9090285190291446603.post-74759058246293830882008-09-22T15:10:00.000-07:002008-09-22T15:22:09.762-07:00<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_EzEqeq_huk4/SNgad1ZYDnI/AAAAAAAAAZo/VmqUQK19B6s/s320/sorry+we%27re+closed+small.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5248974465552354930" />
BERNAL PLAYGROUND CLOSURE: SEPT. 25 & 26 (Thursday & Friday)

This week Bernal Library construction crews will be working on the roof with hot tar and, for safety reasons, have requested that Recreation and Parks Department close the playground on Thursday and Friday, September 25th and 26th .

Please be aware and pass this information along to any parents who might want to know.

Apologies for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding and cooperation.Rare Bookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12495394549822650533noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9090285190291446603.post-67332822955759942962008-09-12T09:00:00.000-07:002008-09-12T16:54:59.416-07:00Punch List: Here's a humorous look at some building boo boos that must have caused a few sleepless nights. Thanks to our bookmobile staff, Bernal participated in SFPLs summer reading effort Read in the Wildest Places. More thanks go out to The Friends of SFPL for funding our special events held at Red Hill Books and Junipero Serra School. And last but certainly not least-- thanks to Red Hill Books and J. Serra School for giving us their space and time.

The summer kicked off with Nick Barone’s puppets. Nick set up his portable stage and sound system in a shady corner of J. Serra's schoolyard. The afternoon’s entertainment was a rendition of The Enchanted Forest. A noisy, hot playground quieted down into an audience of delighted kids and adults. In July, J. Serra once again played host – this time to The Bubble Lady. And once again a hot day cooled off as the audience was showered, encased and delighted by The Bubble Lady’s antics.

Red Hill Books hosted the August events-- Elizabeth Falconer’s Kotoworld and Bernal’s own Familia Peña-Govea. Since both concerts were early evening performances, some audience members were sporting pajamas! Ms. Falconer played her 6 foot long “dragon” and told mouse tales. Later, the kids were invited to come up and explore the 23-stringed instrument. Later in the month Familia Peña-Govea held forth with a program of global music. Their concert extended from one hour into two, closing the bookstore down with a very happy attendance.

HATS OFF TO THE KIDS IN J SERRA'S SUMMER PROGRAM. Eighty children (grades 1 -5) signed up for Read in the Wildest Places. The enthusiastic group made great use of the bookmobile-- ALL 80 COMPLETED OUR SUMMER READING LOG. 100% is not a bad return... Finally, I need to relate an incident that truly made my summer. Mid-summer I visited the first-graders to see how they were coming along. Upon my entering their room, the kids burst out into a rambunctious chant “I love my library card, I love my library card!” (no prompts from their paraprofessional either.) As Bernal's children’s librarian, it just doesn’t get much better. --ValerieRare Bookshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12495394549822650533noreply@blogger.com1
