February 9, 2008 was an important date in Bernal Heights history. It was our last open day before the long-awaited renovation could begin. Our closing party was the best. We estimate that over 500 hundred people attended to say their goodbyes and enjoy the music, fun and food. Local Bernalians Jorge of the Cuban Cowboys and Dave Ricketts of Gaucho and “the one-man musical universe” of Ralph Carney entertained us with amazing music. Luz Gaxiola of Circus Finelli provided fun and friendly clowning and delicious food was donated by Nilda’s Grocery and Filipino Food. Oh, and did I mention the Bernal Dads Race Car (which raised $4,000 for the library) and the make-your-own bookbags?
Thanks to everyone who signed our “Goodbye Book”—it is a treasure—and we promise to transform it into a “Welcome Back” book for our reopening festivities. And in case you missed the party, here are some photos to enjoy!
